The St. Ansgar boys track squad finished as the champions at the Top of Iowa Conference (Eastern Division) Relays held in Osage on Thursday, May 4. Team scoring: Saint Ansgar- 181.5, Central Springs- 124, Osage- 115, West Fork- 80, Newman Catholic-75.50, Northwood-Kensett- 70, Nashuah-Plainfield-49, North Butler- 30, and Rockford-15.
The Saints finished the day with five individual champions and two relay champions. Theo Baldus had a great afternoon in the field events. He had a first place finish in the discus (162-00) and the shot put (47-03.50). Cole Willert also had an impressive day for the Saints. He was the champion in the 400M dash with a time of 51.19 seconds and was also the champion in the 400M hurdles with a time of 55.39 seconds. John Patterson has done a great job this year in the distance races, and he had a great race at the conference meet on Monday, finishing in first place with his time of 10:33.13. Patterson also finished in third place in the 1600M run (4:52.62). The 4x400M relay team of Ethan Kirchgatter, Ben Boerjan, Justin Okland, and Cole Willert finished in first place with a time of 3:32.37 and the 44M shuttle hurdle relay team were champions as well, finishing with a time of 1:01.56. Team members included Brody Bruce, Collin Kramer, Justin Okland, and Cole Willert.
Brody Bruce was the runner-up in the 400M hurdles with a time of 57.56 and Mitchell Smith was the runner-up in the shot put with his throw of 46-07.25. The Saints 800 Sprint Medley team also came in second place. The team ran a time of 1:42.81. Team members were Parker Hendrickson, Sam Juenger, Matt Mattick, and Skylar Blunt.
It was a great team win,” said coach Drew Clevenger. “The kids all performed well and we out performed the scoring expectations we had going into the meet. Every single guy on the roster has improved over the course of the year. The district meet has several good teams and individuals. Our kids are looking forward to the challenge.”
