The St. Ansgar boys’ track and field squad qualified eight events for the state meet to be held in Des Moines May 18-20. The state qualifying meet was held on Thursday, May 11, in Northwood. The St. Ansgar boys had a great night in Northwood with a great team effort to their first place finish with 113.50 points. AGWSR were the runner ups with 92.50.
The field events got things started on Thursday, and a couple Saints qualified for the state meet in the shot put. Mitchell Smith finished in third place with a toss of 48-00.25. Theo Baldus placed right behind Smith in 4th place, with his best throw of 47-08.75. Theo also qualified for the discus with his runner up finish at districts, with his throw of 160-08.
John Patterson got things going in the running events for the Saints boys team, qualifying for the state meet after a third place finish in the 3200M run, running a time of 10:30.21 Then the shuttle hurdle team of Justin Okland, Collin Kramer, Jacob Hemann, and Cole Willert qualified for the state meet with a runner up finish with a time of 1:01.24. Ethan Kirchgatter finished in third in the 200M dash, qualifying for the state meet with a time of 23.85 seconds and in the 400M hurdles, Cole Willert was the district champion with his winning time of 54.32 seconds.
Two more relay teams qualified for the state meet for the Saints after finishing as district champions on Thursday in Northwood. The 4x200M relay team of Ethan Kirchgatter, Justin Okland, Ben Boerjan, and Cole Willert were the district champions with their winning time of 1:33.50. The 4x400M relay team had a first place time of 3:30.94. Members of the 4×400 relay team were Kirchgatter, Boerjan, Okland, and Willert.
