St. Ansgar celebrates Hometown Christmas

St. Ansgar was a festive place this weekend  as the community gathered to celebrate the holidays with kith and kin, for St. Ansgar’s Annual Hometown Christmas festivities, sponsored by the St. Ansgar Community Chamber.

Friday kicked off the fun with the lighting of the community tree at Clausen Park, where folks gathered to assist in decorating the park with lighting displays from local businesses and volunteers.

Members of the high school choir helped get the community into the holiday spirit by leading the crowd in timeless Christmas carols, and the Enterprise Journal and Ashley DeMaris provided warm cocoa and baked goods for the gathering, including Grandma Nancy’s famous fudge, which was a big hit for all who indulged.

Saturday saw the annual Heritage Museum Bake Sale and Soup Luncheon at the Legion, followed by BINGO and a showing at the Creative Arts Gallery at South Square.

The main event on Sunday was Shopping with Santa at South Square, which saw more than 200 young ones participate.

Sponsored by the Chamber, Shopping with Santa allows young children to browse and wrap donated gifts for their loved one’s stockings or for under the tree.  Volunteers assist the young shoppers with picking out, wrapping, bagging and tagging their gifts; which may be for their parents, grandparents, brother, sister, pets, or for any loved ones.

The big man himself, Santa Claus, was present at South Square on Saturday to take pictures (and hear some Christmas wishlists) from all the shoppers, both naughty AND nice.

Congratulations to the Chamber on another successful year of Shopping with Santa, and a very special thank-you to the volunteer organizing committee; Sheila Adams, Heather Mitchell and Crystal Meitner, as well as the countless volunteers and helpers who continually make this event a success.

The St. Ansgar Community Chamber will accept gifts throughout the year for next years Shopping with Santa. We also accept gift bags, tissue paper and name tags.
