Two courageous citizens were recognized by the county for their life-saving efforts during this week’s Supervisors meeting.
On July 3, Ryan Marzen of Alliant Energy and Brian Beaver of L.R.Falk Construction came upon a UTV (utility vehicle) crash in rural Mitchell County, with two children were pinned underneath the overturned vehicle.
Marzen and Beaver were able to lift the UTV off the children, and were able to get them pulled out from underneath the wreckage.
The child most injured was airlifted to the hospital in Iowa City and was in grave condition upon leaving the scene, according to the Mitchell County Sheriff’s Department.
“Citizen responders were crucial in this outcome,” Sheriff Greg Beaver said. “Although we respond immediately, the drive time delays – which are a matter of minutes – sometimes can be the difference between life and death.
“The sheriff’s office needs citizens like Brian and Ryan. In our county I know there are others just like these two men and that is a large part in why Mitchell County is a great county to live in.”
Marzen and Beaver were given “Citizen Responder” awards on behalf of the Sheriff’s Department for their efforts.
