St. Ansgar’s varsity girls basketball team will be looking to build on last season’s success, kicking off the 2019/2020 schedule with three road games against Riceville, Central Springs and New Hampton.
The Saints will no doubt be looking to build on last year’s success, which included a 16-5 record (12-3 conference) which was good enough for runner up in the TIC-East behind Osage. The Green Devils look well-positioned to repeat as conference champs, going 20-2 a year ago and losing only one starter.
“Our goal is to compete for the east half of the TIC conference,” coach Scott Cakerice said. “We know this runs through Osage, and we are looking forward to that opportunity.”
The Saints will have that opportunity in a few short weeks, when they host the Green Devils in their home opener on Dec. 10.
St. Ansgar lost to Osage by only two points in their first of two meetings last season, and they return plenty of firepower to give them a chance against the Green Devils and the rest of the conference.
The Saints offense will look to run through juniors Hali Anderson (guard) and Brooklyn Hackbart (forward) this season. The pair combined for 26.4 ppg during their sophomore campaigns, with Anderson leading the conference in points per game at 15.5.
The duo also tore it up on the defensive side of the ball, with Anderson grabbing 91 steals (1st in TIC East) and Hackbart swatting 41 shots (2nd in TIC East).
Hannah Patterson is the lone senior on the team, and will join Anderson in the back-court. A rotation of Juniors Gracie Urbatsch, Maggie Davis, Megan Gooder, will likely fill the other two starting spots, with Lauren Bork, Kirsten Boerjan and Kira Baldus coming in off the bench.
