The St. Ansgar Saints track and field teams made history on Monday, April 8.

The day marked the first time in 40 years St. Ansgar has had a High School track and field meet. The weather couldn’t have been better for their first meet, and the Saints took advantage of their home meet, with the girls team finishing as the champions with 183 team points and the boys ending the night as the runner ups with 133 points, trailing Northwood-Kensett’s 150 points.

Teams at the first track meet for the boys were Northwood-Kensett, Osage, Nashua-Plainfield, West Fork, Newman Catholic, and Riceville. The girls had one less team. Osage, Riceville, GHV, Clear Lake and Nashua-Plainfield were the girls teams.

The St. Ansgar girls were locked in on Monday in St. Ansgar. They finished with four first place finishes on the night. Addy Carlson was huge for the Saints, winning both the 1500M run (5:32.44) and the 3000M run (11:54.88).

Madison Minnis sprinted her way to a first place finish in the 400M dash (1:06.53) and the 4x400M relay team of Meaghann Davis, Addy Carlson, Madison Minnis and Taylor Hanna ran their way to a first place finish with a time of 4:30.92.

“The thing that is so neat for me is that the kids finally get to run at home,” said Head Girls Coach Phil Baldus of the first home track meet in 40 years. “They get to showcase their talents in front of their crowd. We’ve had a lot of success over the past couple of seasons but we’re never at home so if you don’t get to a meet, you have to just read about it but now things will be changing a little bit with us being able to do some meets at home.”

For the St. Ansgar boys, they ended their first meet at home in 40 years with five first place finishes. Seth Hershey came in first place in the 800M run (2:13.67) and Riley Witt had a first place finish in the 1600M run (4:55.84). Sage Hulshizer had a big throw of 130’10” in the discus for a first place finish. Two relay teams came in first for the boys team.

The 4x100M relay team of Ryan Cole, Jack Sievert, Braden Powers and Collin Kramer ran a time of 46.68 seconds to come in first place. The 4x400M relay team finished with a time of 3:40.27. Relay members were Skylar Blunt, Mark Bless, Braden Powers and Seth Hershey.

“My favorite thing on the night was seeing how the meet ran so well,” said Head Boys Coach Drew Clevenger. “We had many willing volunteers who did a great job keeping the meet moving along. It takes a lot of dedicated people to run a track meet. “St. Ansgar has a long and distinguished tradition in track and field and we finally have a facitly that matches that history,” continued Clevenger. “Coach Rich Sherman, Coach Bob Peterson, and Coach Phil Baldus have a combined 140 years of track coaching experience here at St. Ansgar and it was really cool to see their reactions to how the night went. It was a great night for our community and our school system.”
