What a week it was for the St. Ansgar ball teams.
The softball squad hunkered down like Cousin Eddy at a buffet line, chowing down on their opponents in their five victories last week to extend their win-streak to seven games.
The girls started the week by knocking off Newman-Catholic, and wrapped up with an 8-3 victory against Forest City that was closer than the final score indicated.
The Saints gave up 11 hits but held the Indians to only 3 runs with some spectacular defense.
In the top of the fifth, Forest City scored two runs and looked as if they were going to pile on more when they loaded the bases with no outs.
But pitcher Lily Walk and company were cool as a cucumber, throwing two force-outs at home plate and tossing a strike out for the third to get out of the jam.
The baseball team won four out of five this week, with their only loss coming to 11-2 Kee.
The Saints notched an early candidate for win-of-the-season last week, knocking off Newman-Catholic in an upset victory.
The win is even more spectacular when you consider Newman’s dominance in recent years. The Knights have won three of the last four state titles, and in their last 67 games, they’ve lost only three times.
Coincidentally, two of those three losses have come at the hands of the Saints.
Both the baseball and softball teams sit at 11-4 thus far, and each have a tilt with rival Osage looming on Friday.
